Assessment appointment
for your feet and ankles

The Edmonton Bone and Joint Centre is responsible for seeing all foot and ankle patients in the Edmonton region. As such, once your referral is accepted, you will see an assessment physician who will determine the type of care you may need. This may include further tests, injections, physical therapy or a referral to see an orthopaedic surgeon.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, some assessment physicians are doing telephone appointments. For more information on how to prepare for your virtual appointment, please see our ‘Guide to Virtual Appointments’.

What you need to bring to your appointment

• A piece of government-issued photo ID (like a driver’s license)

• Your Alberta Health Care card

• Up-to-date X-rays* (we will be able to access these digitally)

*If you have not had X-rays done within the past 6 months, please use the requisition sent with your appointment letter to have X-rays taken before your appointment. You can have these X-rays done at ANY X-ray clinic in Alberta. We will be able to view them on the computer once they have been taken. MRIs are NOT a substitute for X-rays.

During your appointment

During your assessment appointment, the assessment physician will:

  • Review your medical history and medications you are currently on.
  • Review the history of your foot and ankle issue (when and how did it start, how long it has persisted for, how is the pain, etc.).
  • Review the treatments you have undergone to date for this issue and the investigations that have been conducted.

Based on this information, they will then come up with a treatment plan and determine whether follow-up with them is necessary. If they conclude that surgery is necessary to resolve your foot and ankle issue, you will be referred to a foot and ankle surgeon.

Appointment Considerations

Please allow ample time for your appointment. Our assessment physicians work hard to stay on schedule, however, surgical patients sometimes require extra time.
